Ignorance in 2017 is Not Bliss, it’s BS

By now I’m sure we’ve all heard about BoB trying to tell us that slavery never happened because he never saw a slave ship. For a while I really hoped it was clickbait of the young man being misquoted, but no. He truly tweeted this phrase:

Screen Shot 2017-12-07 at 11.55.01 AM

“They say slavery lasted 400 yrs… America is only 250 yrs old… You ever seen a slave ship? They can find a billion year old dinosaur bone but can’t find any slave ships. #AseerTheDukeofTiers 🤔 #apparently#SlaveryIsNotInMyDNA #WeBeenHere 🇲🇦”

At this point, we’re going to need twitter to implement an IQ test upon registering because wth?

  • First of all, America did not have a monopoly on slavery, they just dominated the game. To save your educated self some time, I won’t bore you with history that you already know.
  • Beyond that, the majority of us are also aware that the land mass that is North America has been here far beyond the 250 years that it decided to start going by America. You know, kind of like Sean Combs was still in existence before he decided to go by Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, etc?
  • My most pressing question (if I can actually choose one) is still this: where are you looking for your slave ships at? Because it took me all of one google search for images to pop up and I’m sure it would take hime one good trip down to DC to see the one standing in the Smithsonian Museum of African American History. Like, if not the internet or that museum, where else were you looking…and calling it a conclusive search at that?

I bring up all of this to say that right now, in the age of Trump, modern day slavery, sexual harassment awareness on the rise, game-changing tax bills, etc, WE CANNOT AFFORD TO BE IGNORANT. More than just awareness of the madness that is current events, African and African-American history matters. Without it, we get brothers walking around tweeting senseless thoughts like that. Thoughts that not only diminish but erase the struggles of those who endured what he could never imagine enduring. Thoughts that we can’t afford to have while privileged with all of this access to info literally at our fingertips.

But more important than throwing that necessary shade, is continuing to shed light on these real issues that still face our people today, even after the initial media hype. Yes, our people, because, “no one is free until we are all free.” (MLK JR.)

Below is a quick synopsis on the Libya Slave Trade if you haven’t read up on it yet:

  • Origins? Well, racism. More specifically, Libya is the main point of transit for Africans traveling to Europe by sea. The removal of Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has experienced a vacuum and instability in government authority, creating space for something so heinous to be conducted without immediate intervention.
  • Also because Europe has cracked down on their immigration laws because apparently they can ravage Africa’s resources then deny Africans those resources when they need them.
  • As a result, African migrants who set out on a journey through Libya to Europe by sea, find themselves held at these detention centers and subject to slavery, rape and torture.
  • Thousands have been rescued and returned home, but there is still more to go.
  • The International Organization on Migration reported this in April 2017; this is not new, the trending topic is. If this was an issue far before it went trending, it will continue to be one long after we’re done tweeting about it if we fall back into our first world comfort zones.

Don’t criticize those who were complacent during your ancestors’ slavery when it’s still happening and you have the voice that can help to change that. 1. I don’t even have words. LOL. This is too much. And what’s crazy is that the people with ridiculous beliefs like this are actually out here convincing people that they have this new truth. Meanwhile, they won’t take any of my words seriously as a scholar who does immense research and analysis before coming up with a sentence lol. Idk. It’s crazy. I know it’s cool now to be anti-intellectual but. my goodness, where does it stop??

    1. Lmao I’m dying at, “I️ know it’s cool now to be anti-intellectual.” 😂😂 The world we are living in man. Ignorance is really going to be the death of us if we let it 😂😂😩😩
